Development of Integrated Traffic Data Dashboard

Feb. 2026 - Present

PI: Yao-Jan Wu, Ph.D., P.E

Co-PI: Bharat Pathivada, Ph.D.

The City of Peoria has state-of-the-art traffic sensors to improve arterial traffic safety and mobility. The sensors not only can accurately detect vehicles for traffic control but also collect a large amount of traffic data. These large datasets provide the city with grreat potential to tackle a variety of traffic issues effectively and efficiently. However, the traffic sensors purchased by the City of Peoria are manufactured and sold by different vendors. As a result, the output traffic data from these sensors are usually in a different data structure, as well as different Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that need to be used to extract data. Therefore, the goal of this project is to develop databases that can integrate data from different traffic sensors installed across the City of Peoria. These databases can be used to supply dashboards with data, allowing the city to quickly obtain traffic insights. This project will help the city to understand various datasets collected from different kinds of sensors and explore their potential applications. Regarding data processing, a web-based dashboard from integrated traffic sensor data will help traffic engineers to process the data more efficiently for decison-making.
