In the past six years, the Town of Marana has collaborated with the University of Arizona (UA) to improve mobility and safety along the town’s arterials. The collaboration led to the development of interactive traffic monitoring tools, the establishment of traffic sensors inventory, the evaluation and optimization of traffic signals, and the assessment of red-light running behavior. While the project has successfully devised several technology-driven solutions to improve traffic along arterials, the Town of Marana still has some transportation-related challenges that could be addressed through research and innovative solutions. The technical expertise and resources needed to tackle these challenges are available at UA’s Center for Applied Transportation Sciences (CATS). The primary aim of this project is to provide technical support that enhances the use of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to improve traffic management in the Town of Marana. The project will incorporate advanced methods and technologies essential in traffic management. With increased funding and collaborative opportunities across the United States, support from an academic partner in addressing transportation challenges would benefit the Town of Marana. This project will involve the use of UA resources and support to seek funding that will focus on improving transportation systems in the Town of Marana. Further efforts will be dedicated to the interactive tool developed during the previous multi-year project to expand its use by the town officials beyond the traffic engineering department.
